The texture in areas unaffected by moisture is very solid on the wall. The first set of photos show laths that are too close, and the plaster wont push through.

Use your little finger as good guide - the gap between the laths should be around 1/4 of an inch, or the width of the average little finger. I'm also worried that there is lingering moisture in the plaster wall that could cause our texture to fail again. At Best of Lime, we find the easiest way to illustrate the correct spacing of wooden laths is through Goldilocks. However, you can still find a lot of homes with horsehair plaster. In fact, drywall began replacing the process in the 1950s. The customer says he never saw any sign of water on the walls painted surface. Horsehair plaster, also known as lath and plaster, is typically found in older homes and homes of significant historical value. This practice is not commonly used today. To prevent this, saturate those surfaces with conditioner. I found it strange that the water/moisture has apparently run down between the outside brick wall and through the plaster before being trapped under the texture and paint. Dry lath and the exposed plaster edge will suck water out of wet plaster before it has a chance to harden. I would appreciate your feedback on if it is possible to apply something to the wall then texture it again. However, I'm wondering it we should take a chunk out and see if the plaster is laced with mold as well. At Bernardi, high-quality building products have been our family’s passion since we founded the business in 1971. We believe the mold is on the surface and can easily be removed, killed and sealed. For over 50 years, carpenters and do-it-yourselfers have trusted Bernardi Building Supply to provide them with the highest quality lath and plaster products in Toronto and the surrounding areas. We also found visible traces of surface mold on the plaster when we removed the loose texture and paint. As you can see in the photo there is mold. The moisture came out of the plaster underneath the texture and paint, causing the surface to bubble. We textured the wall with knockdown and then it was painted.Īs a result of a roof leak, which has been repaired, moisture caused the texture to fail in areas. We have a problem with knockdown texture coming off a plaster wall.Ībout 2 years ago we wire-brushed a plaster wall and removed any loose material.
